The many kilns seen in the district are evidence of the years of tobacco growing. This ceased in 2006 and the major industries, apart from timber manufacturing, are still agricultural as the tobacco crops were replaced by grapevines, nut trees, cherries, and varieties of berries and fruits. Beef and dairy cattle are also important to the region.
Visitors to the area are well catered for with interests as diverse as cycling the Rail Trail, snow and water skiing, mountain walking and climbing, gold and gem fossicking and, of course visiting wineries and sampling local cuisine.
